Who does what with Nottinghamshire’s waste?

Broadly speaking, the district and borough councils are responsible for collecting rubbish; they are referred to as ‘Waste Collection Authorities’ or WCAs.

They provide kerbside collections for all households, and some schools, in their area. In Nottinghamshire all the local councils provide wheeled bins from which they collect your general waste and dry recyclables.

Some also offer garden waste collections, which are also from wheeled bins, and some offer kerbside glass collections.

They also provide 'bring site' recycling facilities. These are the recycling containers or banks typically located at supermarkets, leisure centres and public car parks.

In addition they provide bulky collections services. This enables you to dispose of household items that are too large or heavy for your regular kerbside collections. Items will typically be collected, for a small fee, from outside your home.

The district and borough councils are responsible for the removal of small incidents of fly-tipped rubbish on the highway. The Environment Agency is responsible for large incidents of fly-tipping or for chemical waste.

For full details of any of these services including information about collection dates, missed collections and replacement bins and boxes, please contact your district or borough council.

The County Council is responsible for arranging for the disposal of your waste; it is the ‘Waste Disposal Authority’ or WDA.

The County Council also provides the Household Waste Recycling Centres and delivers waste education services in schools.

Trade waste, also referred to as commercial and industrial waste, is not accepted at the Household Waste Recycling Centres. If you produce waste as a result of business or commercial activities, some of the district and borough councils offer a collection service for this waste. Alternatively you can source a private waste contractor such as those in the Yellow Pages for the disposal of this waste, or any waste not accepted at the Household Waste Recycling Centres. You are however, responsible for ensuring that any contractor that you use has the appropriate permits and licences. For more information contact the Environment Agency.

If a tradesperson creates waste when carrying out work at your home it is their legal responsibility to arrange for it to be removed and dispoosed of. It is your legal responsibility to ensure that they have the appropriate permits and licences. For more information contact the Environment Agency.

Please note that Nottingham City Council is a unitary authority. This means it is responsible for all waste management functions (collection and disposal). If you are a Nottingham City resident please contact Nottingham City Council for information about the services they provide.
